On Sunday night, as I was
watching the Grammys (and
agreeing with Joey's assessment of the awards),
I couldn't help wondering: Just how does Amy Winehouse get her hair to do
that?
Then I remembered a place in the
Heights that I've been wanting to check out for months: Venus Hair.
A local institution for 30 years,
Susan Venus and her staff pride themselves on being able to provide their
customers with ANY style, from a trim to a multi-colored mohawk. If anyone
could give me an Amy Winehouse beehive, I knew they would be the ones.
An added bonus: Beehives stay good
for two weeks!

Big Hair - The
Sequel Last week the
Grammys inspired me to visit Venus Hair on 19th Street in the Heights to
see if they could give me an Amy Winehouse beehive. The video detailed the
making of the beehive and the finished product.
But that, my friends, was
just the beginning. You didn't think I'd be allowed to avoid the public
humiliation and bizarre reactions a hairstyle like a beehive can bring,
did you? Not a chance.
Today's video shows part two
-- what happened after the hair was done as I made my way around town.
Honestly, it was pretty fun rocking hair like that, and most of the
comments were really encouraging. Not all, of course, but most:

Venus Hair
When Susan Venus' art car, called the Venus Hairse, is parked outside
her beauty shop, it means the salon is open for business. Once inside,
you may still think you're looking at an art car or that you've fallen
through the looking glass. Mardi Gras masks, beads, mannequins, Venus de
Milo figures and paintings by local artists cover every wall and hang
from ceilings at Venus Hair. Customers wear retro animal-print capes to
protect clothing. Heights characters drop by to chat as if they're
visiting Mayberry's barbershop. There are no conservative style police
lurking here, so no request is greeted with a raised eyebrow. Ask for
the world: Venus is only too happy to dye your hair three colors, give
you a Mohawk or create a tinted, bouffant up do for your great-aunt
Esmeralda's wedding. It's your hair. Express yourself.
